Have you got tight joints/ligaments/muscles within the ankle or foot area or are you currently hypermobile?
(hypermobile is what every dance student desires to be. However, you will find problems in the highly arched foot, just as you will find problems within the foot that doesn't curve over the top of the instep.
Also, the crowd isn't aware of the aesthetics that dancers and choreographers are obsessed with. I remember when i took a neighbor of mine to see Swan Lake. The ballerina would be a extremely popular dancer who had highly arched feet. My neighbor is a trained artist, familiar with human body. Sometime throughout the ballet, she leaned over to me and whispered "what's wrong together with her feet?" Later she confessed that it made her feel nauseous to determine the ballerina's feet pointe like "they are broken".
A significant new experience for me to hear THAT.
If you want more flexibility within the ankles and foot, did you know that stretching in the knee down can help with that? Using a soft rubber ball, knead the muscles of the tibia (shin) by kneeling and sitting on the feet, and placing the ball under the tibial muscles underneath the knee. Press in it gently, moving the ball on the shin towards the ankles, and you will get some relaxation in those muscles. You might feel some very tender spots where tension has built in the muscles.
And then (I learned this from Deborah Vogel) put the ball beneath your metatarsal area, over the joints, and lean into it GENTLY, and you'll feel a wonderful stretch over your instep area, right where you need it to curve more.
Do you know how to strengthen the feet?
Are you aware that cramping in your feet, lower calves as well as upper calves, results in that your tiny foot muscles are weak? When they canrrrt do the task, your leg muscles that end down inside your foot area, will have to perform the work.
This results in calf tension that will shorten your demi plie, lessen your ankle flexibility, and stop the development of the arch you want.
The foot muscles are strengthened by lifting the big toe off the floor while relaxing the other four, then lifting the 4 toes off the floor while relaxing the large toe. This increases strength and also improves the brain/foot communication a great deal.
Another being active is like playing the piano together with your toes, starting with the large toe, after which starting with the little toe.
Choosing and consistently practising exercises for the daily routines will help you achieve realistic goals, and it will enable you to get the most optimum results prior to going the ballet store to get precisely the right easily fit in ballet shoes or pointe shoes.
